Zarate’s … a little piece of Latin flavor in Edmond
Tangy tart and especially tasty the Ceviche Mixto Peruano, at Zarate’s Latin Grill in Edmond, has been one of my favorite dishes for years. May through August it is an edible oasis but in winter it calls to mind all the best parts of summer.
The soft pink tilapia chunks are bathed in the acidic Leche de Tigre. The Leche is a traditional sauce, with hints of lime, that is foundational to this classic comfort food. Zarate’s ceviche references elements of the past while still feeling incredibly fresh and current.
Seafood is my favorite food, particularly shrimp, the protein’s versatility keeps my tastebuds on their toes. The firmer bite to the shrimp is a great counter to the textures of the fish and the crunchier corn kernels.
Hominy doesn’t normally excite me, but Zarate’s makes the corn cousin fun and fresh with how it counters the livelier components of the dish. I am a big proponent of two things, onions, and cilantro. The red onion is infused by the Leche which mixes with its own pungent flavor. To the side is mild cilantro sauce that goes well with just about everything.
Elevated French fry application is to be applauded. The Peruvian Saltados on the Zarate’s menu to those unfamiliar with the distinct South American fare can seem peculiar. Their fry and linguini-based offerings are expertly combined with yummy tomatoes and red onion. Red wine and soy sauce bring so much dynamic flavor to these far-reaching plates. Finally, on the side, you have the subtle yucca and sweet plantains.
They also have you covered on atmosphere. As if the feast of delicious foods weren’t enough the interiors of Zarate’s are just as much a feast for the eyes. Bold colors, flags, and pieces of cultural art are dotted all over the vibrant walls.
The varied cuisines offered at Zarate’s are a staple of the city of Edmond for good reason. Foods from all over Central and South America pepper the menu. Owner Jorge Zarate can often be seen jovially jaunting between the tables of satisfied diners. Hospitality and family are present in everything Zarate’s does.
