LTB American Pale ALE Recipe

Here is one of Learn to Brew of Edmond’s favorite brews. It is similar to the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and a great recipe for a new home brewer to try!

Liberty Hamman, Learn to Brew’s Brew Advisor, has perfected this recipe over the last two years for both an Extract and All Grain batch. For the beginner, the extract gives you a simple brew, requiring less equipment and time.

It pours with a white, frothy head and is full-bodied. The Cascade hops generate a nice aroma and complex filled with spicy flowers and citrus. This continues into a balanced flavor with smooth rich malt. There is a nice hop finish and aftertaste to this beer and is an excellent example of an American Pale Ale.

Step by Step fo Extract Recipe

In a large soup pot, heat 5 gallons (19 L) of water to 166 °F (74 °C). Add crushed grain ( Caramel 10) to grain bag. Submerge bag and let grains steep around 155 °F (68 °C) for 20 minutes. Remove grain bag and allow liquid to drip back into the pot. Heat liquid in brewpot to a boil, then stir in the malt extracts, add first charge of hops and begin the 90 minutes boil. With 60 minutes left in boil, add hops. At 30 minutes left in the boil add hops, add Irish moss. At the end of the boil, add last charge of hops, cool wort and transfer to fermenter. Add water to make 5 gallons (19 L). Aerate wort and pitch yeast. Ferment at 68 °F (20 °C). If you prefer, rack to secondary when fermentation is complete. Bottle or keg when beer falls clear.
