Margaritas because Margaritas

When you think of the Most Magical Place on Earth and Oklahoma, not too much may come to mind. However, I am here to tell you that OKC and Disneyland do in fact have something in common, and it’s delicious. Dole Whip. Yes, that magical treat that you can only find in a Disney Park. Part pineapple, part frozen treat, 100% magical. While it’s not the easiest to jet set away to California or Florida or afford the price tag, you can now head down to Mexican Radio in the Plaza District for the magical treat- plus tequila. Yes, you read that correct, Mexican Radio has a DOLE WHIP MARGARITA, and it’s as amazing as you think. Just like Disney, Mexican Radio’s version has a base of pineapple, but here is where the real magic starts. They add banana liquor, coconut cream, agave, lime and to finish- a rim full of colorful fruity pebble salt. All blended together with Blanco tequila to create one of the best margaritas ever and a personal favorite in OKC.

Since National Margarita Day is approaching (2/22) I couldn’t think of a better spot to celebrate. I mean, Taco Tuesday and National Margarita Day, pretty sure Mexican Radio was made for this. Beside the magical Dole Whip Margarita, they have 3 other house made frozen bevvies to choose from. Black cherry to sangria to a grapefruit mule, you can’t go wrong. They also have a great list of fresh cocktails to inspire you to try something new or indulge in your old standby. To round off the drink list there is a great selection of wines and beer including local bottles and taps.

However, it’s not only a great spot for drinks, when it’s a Tuesday you have to have some tacos, and they have some tasty options! They cover all your filling basics from beef, chicken, pork, seafood and veggies. Something for every picky eater you know. My personal favorites are the birria tacos (that consommé), carne asada, ahi tuna tartare, and crispy buffalo cauliflower. With options ranging from fried chicken and potato crunch wrap to more traditional pollo verde and carnitas, every choice is a real winner.  Besides the drool worthy tacos don’t skip the sides. I never thought I’d be the one to say my favorite food at a Mexican restaurant is crispy green rice and elotes style cauliflower, yet here I am. The crispy green rice is like nothing I’ve had before. Cilantro, peas, sauteed cabbage, radish and crème mix together to create something unique and delicious. Then there was the elote cauliflower- as if two of my favorite things had a baby together. A delicious, perfect baby.  It’s everything you love about elotes, the creaminess mixed with the spicy but on roasted cauliflower. Adding a satisfying bite with crispy onions and jalapenos. Trust me, you’re going to love it.

If the margaritas and outstanding menu weren’t enough to entice you on, how about they toss in one of the best happy hour menus in the city. From 2-6PM Monday through Friday you can get 7 different tacos for $2.95, a dip trio for $8 and frozen bevvies (hello Dole Whip), house margs and draft beers for $4.50. Next time you get the itch to escape to The Most Magical Place on Earth but on a budget, head to Mexican Radio and live your best life, right here in the heart of OKC.
